Houston Area COVID-19 Response

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The National Christian Foundation of Houston is dedicated to keeping you updated about COVID-19 and our community’s needs and response. The speed with which conditions are changing is breathtaking. We are confident you are receiving updates from other sources on the progression of the virus in Houston and elsewhere. We’d like to provide you with some information regarding immediate needs of our ministries and what you can do to help.

Support your home church.

Without the ability to hold church services or other gatherings, our churches risk a loss of community as well as financial support. You can help by participating in virtual (online) services, virtually convening small groups and other gatherings, and at least continuing, if not increasing, your personal financial support, as others may not be able to do so. You might also consider encouraging your church leadership by simply letting them know that you are standing with them in this season full of uncertainty, and asking how you might help in other specific ways.  If your church (or one you are familiar with) needs assistance with technological integration, check out the resources here.

Support your favorite ministries.

Many of you are regular supporters of strong local as well as international ministries. Some of these have been forced to cancel fundraisers and are experiencing a shortfall in contributions. At the same time, many of them are experiencing (or soon will experience) a surge in demand for service. This is especially true for our many assistance ministries that serve primarily the working poor (who are losing their jobs by the thousands) and those that serve the homeless. Examples include Houston area assistance ministries, such as the Christian Community Service Center, and homeless shelters, such as Star of Hope Mission. Reach out directly or through their website and find out how you can help. We have also compiled further information that might be beneficial to these organizations at our resources page here.

Love your neighbor.

Our national office recently circulated a list of 19 simple ways in which we can show the love of Christ at this time. Check out the story at the link above! It’s rich with actionable suggestions, from shopping local to “random” acts of generosity.

Find other charities to support.

Many organizations are being adversely impacted by COVID-19 and its economic consequences. Many of these are on the frontlines of our community’s response to COVID-19. The United Way of Greater Houston and the Greater Houston Community Foundation just completed a Nonprofit Needs Data Dashboard to help you see where the needs are greatest. Of those non-profits identified, many are currently approved for grants from your NCF Donor Advised Fund. Merely for your convenience, we’ve compiled a list here with direct links to each organization’s profile in your giving portal.

Furthermore, if you feel called to provide some financial support to the COVID response efforts without directing it to a specific non-profit, UWGH and GHCF have established the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund. Should you wish to learn more, please go to greaterhoustonrecovery.org. For more resources and information on COVID-19, the CARES Act, and impact on giving, check out our giver resources here.

Steward your business.

As a business owner or manager, you are God’s steward of an enterprise that provides employment and quality goods and services to many of God’s children.  If you or someone you know owns a business that is being adversely impacted by the pandemic, you may find some useful resources here.

Pray.

This is clearly the most important and powerful thing that we, as believers, can do, so let us commit to one another to cry out to the Lord that He will transform our minds and direct our steps in the way that He would have us go.

Never doubt or forget that you are a precious blessing to your family, your co-workers, your friends and your entire community. We encourage you to let the light of Christ shine through you.

Blessings to all,

Your NCF Houston Team
