As the COVID-19 outbreak maintains its devastating grip on countless lives worldwide, the economic outlook is uncertain. Helping your generous clients leverage our tax laws to creatively support their favorite causes is critical and timely. Using a case study approach, attendees will learn to identify opportunities to enable their clients to achieve their philanthropic goals through tax-leveraged use of asset based gifts of both real estate and ownership in closely-held business entities. Attendees will also increase their knowledge and awareness of the myriad of technical issues to navigate when advising clients on how to successfully position and complete their complex gifts, including: income tax deduction rules, unrelated business taxable income, unrelated debt financed income, assignment of income issues, self-dealing prohibitions, private benefit prohibitions, and excess business holding rules.
Attendees will learn:
- How to capture multiple tax savings when gifting business interests to charity including S-Corps, C-Corps, LLCs and partnerships.
- Strategies for maximizing charitable giving as part of a larger business succession plan, while minimizing transaction challenges such as UBTI, excess business holdings, and controlling vs. non-controlling interests.
- The difference between using a Private Foundation and Donor-Advised Fund for (family or corporate) grantmaking and philanthropy.
- How gifting income-generating assets or business interests can be used to fund charitable endeavors optimizing charitable goals, business goals, and transition planning even long before a sale is contemplated.

Jeanne Lee McMains, JD
Senior Vice President, Complex Gift Solutions, National Christian Foundation
Jeanne has been a practicing attorney in the areas of estate planning, business succession, and non-profits since 1995. After owning her own law firm and practicing with a large Midwest law firm, Jeanne currently serves as the Vice President of Gift Planning with The National Christian Foundation where she assists families nationwide with achieving their charitable gift planning goals. Throughout her career, Jeanne has served as a featured presenter for several financial institutions including A.G. Edwards & Sons, AllianceBernstein, Fidelity Investments, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, New York Life, Northwestern Mutual, Principal Financial Group, and Ronald Blue Trust. She is also a featured speaker for numerous charitable organizations including: Alliance Defense Fund, Christian Legal Society, Christian Medical Dental Association, Compassion International, Focus on the Family, Kingdom Advisors, Pepperdine University, and the Young Life Foundation. Jeanne obtained her law degree from Indiana University on academic scholarship and her undergraduate degree from Purdue University with highest distinction honors (summa cum laude equivalent).
Rachael Watson, JD
Gift Planning Attorney
Rachael Watson currently serves as a Gift Planning Attorney with The National Christian Foundation (NCF) where she assists individuals and families nation-wide in achieving greater generosity and increased tax efficiency in charitable giving through complex gifts.
Early in her career, Rachael worked as a Certified Financial Planner for Ronald Blue & Company and Wells Fargo Bank. Rachael began practicing law in 2007, specializing in the areas of estate planning and nonprofit law. Prior to joining NCF, she owned her own law firm. Rachael earned a Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law with honors and a BS in political science, magna cum laude, from Liberty University.
Michael R. Greenlee, JD
Due Diligence Attorney
Since August 2018, Mike Greenlee has served as a Due Diligence Attorney in the Complex Gift Solutions Group at National Christian Foundation. From 1996 until joining National Christian Foundation, Mr. Greenlee served as legal counsel to various emerging growth technology companies during his tenure at Morris Manning & Martin, LLP and two law firms that he founded. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Greenlee served in various roles in the engineering, regulatory and procurement organizations of BellSouth. Mr. Greenlee holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law. Mr. Greenlee is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and is a licensed patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
