Two things will take us a very long way in our Christian life: Trusting God and understanding we are his beloved children. This week, we share stories about how our generosity is tied to that understanding and how our willingness to take risks is too.
Jesus employed many metaphors to teach us about money, but traditional financial ministries focus almost exclusively on one – the steward. They emphasize God’s ownership of everything and our identity as stewards of his property. This idea is solidly biblical and helpful too.
But our relationship with the Lord is about more than just one of stewardship. Jesus also called us “friends” and “children.” Generosity has a lot to do with how we see ourselves and how we see God. And there’s freedom and comfort in a more balanced view of our identity as children of a generous God.
According to new research from Giving USA, charitable giving in America rose 4.2 percent to $449.64 billion. Despite predictions that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would discourage donors, giving has continued to grow each year since the law was enacted.
