3 tips for building a generous business

By Michael King

Hundreds of successful business owners throughout the country are discovering unique ways in which they can use their businesses for generosity. With the right strategy, millions of dollars are being transformed into vital support for ministry work, and the lives of owners, their families, their employees, and their communities are being changed in the process.

Own a business? You may be able to turn that business into a giving engine too. Here are some key ideas:

  1. Most business owners are not aware they can give a portion of their business to charity.
  2. Even though a gift of a business interest reduces the owner's assets, this type of giving often has minimal impact on the owners’ lifestyle, cash flow, or long-term capitalization of their business.
  3. Giving an interest in a business may enable owners to double their current cash giving, while dramatically reducing their income tax liability.

BOOK

Gary Ringger is a businessman – a smart one – and a Christian – a faithful one. But it wasn’t until he wrote a contract with God about a company he owned that he really started to live into being both. Years later, after many of the sorts of ups and downs businesses tend to have, the business sold. That launched Gary and his family on the journey of a lifetime. The contract became the foundation for a ministry that has grown and spread its arms wide open to orphaned children around the world. And at home, that ministry became the family purpose, bonding the generations of Ringgers together in ways they never could have imagined. This quick and conversational read isn’t new. But if you haven’t read it yet, we think you should. We hope a part two is coming soon, because this ministry, and its story, continues to expand.
