It’s interesting that no one questions why the father in the prodigal son story agrees to give his younger son his inheritance early. The son’s request is an unusual and potentially insulting one. But the father agrees, and it seems it was just what that son needed. What do your kids need from you, and how can you make sure they get it?
Just three years ago, as Robert Smith, founder of Vista Equity Partners, faced the Morehouse class of 2019, he brought with him a surprise announcement: Not one student in the audience would have to bear the burden of student debt after they graduated. He paid to forgive all $34 million of it. Four months later, the students would discover that the gift included loans their parents had taken out as well. In the fall of 2021, he announced a new $50 million gift to fund an innovative program to keep Black students from being burdened by debt in the future.
