Steps to create a supporting organization
Download PDFEstablishing a supporting organization (SO) is a meaningful way to structure your charitable giving. NCF can help you create one under our group exemption, which is generally faster than filing directly with the IRS.
The process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish. Your attorney can work alongside NCF’s team every step of the way.
Here is how the process unfolds:
- Submit your SO application to NCF for review
- NCF determines the appointed representatives for your SO’s board
- Sign the SO offer letter and agreement once approved
- Finalize organizational documents with your attorney, with NCF’s support
- Submit a Request for Inclusion in NCF’s group exemption to complete the process
Once everything is signed and submitted, NCF provides acknowledgement and acceptance of your SO, both to you and to the IRS. From there, your supporting organization is ready to carry out your charitable vision.
