Advisors please join us for coffee and a conversation about the asset class most stewardship plans leave out.
A Giving Fund is usually put to two uses: granted to charity, or invested in a conventional portfolio until it is granted. Impact investing is the third use of that same charitable capital, and most families are not aware of this opportunity.
We are honored to host Dr. Kim Tan, biochemist, entrepreneur, and a pioneer of impact investing. He is chairman of SpringHill Management and co-founder of the Transformational Business Network, a community of business people who came to believe that writing another check was not producing the change they hoped for.
Through funds including Inqo Investments in South Africa, Novastar Ventures in Kenya, and Garden Impact in Singapore, he has spent more than two decades putting patient capital into businesses that create jobs and dignity in hard places. Drawing on that work, and on the biblical idea of Jubilee, Dr. Tan will talk about what it looks like to seek both measurable impact and a financial return.
Impact investing puts Giving Fund assets into for-profit businesses and funds that are expected to return money to the fund and to produce a defined social, economic, or spiritual outcome.
It is not a substitute for a grant. It is a third use of charitable capital that is already in the fund.
You will leave with a clearer picture of where impact investing fits alongside grants and a conventional Giving Fund portfolio.
