11 picture books to help you raise little givers

We yearn for our children and grandchildren to embrace a generous life and one day use all God has given them for the good of his kingdom. And we can start by teaching them early. These books, focused on the Creator and source of our blessings, aim to empower you to instill in the young ones in your life the profound value of biblical generosity.

  1. All You Ever Need, by Max Lucado (ages 5-9)
This beautiful parable tells the story of a people thirsty for water and a man who comes to freely offer them cool, clean water to drink. Discuss with children the similarities between Jesus and the Watermaster’s son from the story. Repeat the Scripture referenced and talk about what Jesus meant when he said we should freely give because we have freely received (Matthew 10:8).
  2. One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference, by Katie Smith Milway (ages 7-10)
Inspired by real events, this book tells the story of a young boy from Ghana who turns a small loan into a thriving business that supports his family and his community. Introduce children to the world of microloans, and discuss how God tells us those who can be trusted with little can also be trusted with much (Luke 16:10).
  3. The Big Red Tractor and the Little Village, by Francis Chan (ages 3-6)
This parable tells of a farming village with one beloved broken-down tractor. They are barely able to grow enough food to get through the year, until farmer Dave discovers an owner’s manual and proves what the tractor is capable of when it is running properly. Discuss the importance of being spiritually healthy and staying connected to God, so you can do even more for his kingdom (John 15:5).
  4. The Case of Stuart’s Ship, by Stan Toler and Debra White Smith (ages 5-9)
Stuart and Sam learn what the word “stewardship” means and how God wants us to take care of all the things he’s given us. Together with your children, make a list of all the gifts you have received from God, and brainstorm ways you can follow Scripture’s command to be good stewards (1 Peter 4:10).
  5. Roxy the Ritzy Camel, by Anthony DeStefano (ages 3-7)
In this colorful and creative retelling of the parable of the rich young ruler, Roxy the camel must give away all her fancy possessions to fit through the entrance of a lush land. Discuss with your children the difference between the joy Roxy found in her stuff and the joy she found through generosity. Then, read the story of Jesus and the rich young ruler together (Mark 10:17-27).
  6. The Donkey Who Carried a King, by R.C. Sproul (ages 3-7)
Every job is important, no matter how small. In this story, a little boy named Reilly learns to be content with every job and do it to the best of his ability when his grandpa tells the tale of a young donkey who encounters the most selfless servant, Jesus. Discuss Colossians 3:23 and what it might look like for your children to do even the smallest of tasks for the glory of God.
  7. The Beggar and the Bluebird, by Anthony DeStefano (ages 4-8)
In this heartwarming fable, a bluebird, eager to fly south for the winter, stays and sacrifices everything to serve others. After reading, talk about the promise of heaven and the hope found in the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
  8. Ronnie Wilson’s Gift, by Francis Chan (ages 4-8)
At church, Ronnie learns about Jesus’ gift of salvation. He is so amazed by Jesus’ generosity, he wants to give Jesus a gift, too. After reading, discuss with your children what Jesus meant when he said, “Whatever you did for the least of these … you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). In what ways can they be generous to God by being generous to others?
  9. When I Pray for You, by Matthew Paul Turner (ages 2-5)
This beautiful rhyming book reveals the many things we pray for our children. Use this as way to share with your child all the things you pray over them. Tell them that through your prayers they will experience the joy and abundance that God tells us come from generosity (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
  10. The Pine Tree Parable, by Liz Curtis Higgs (ages 2-6)
With Scripture references on every page, this story of generosity teaches about God’s heart for the poor and the importance of using what you have to help others.
