Non-cash giving sources

According to data from the Federal Reserve’s 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, only 10 percent of high-net-worth Americans’ assets are held in cash. The remaining 90 percent is held in non-cash assets, such as real estate, business interests, and other assets. These figures were calculated using total checking and savings accounts, CDs, and savings bonds of high net-worth families divided by all assets owned of high net-worth families.

Only 25 percent of giving comes in the form of non-cash contributions. This is calculated using the total value of individual non-cash charitable contributions from 2017 to 2021 (based on data from the IRS Statistics of Income) divided by total charitable giving from 2017 to 2021 (using data from Giving USA’s Annual Report on Philanthropy).
