Championship-winning UVA coach gives up his pay raise and helps co-workers

At NCF, we love to see generosity in all its forms. Here’s a story of a kind of generosity you don’t see every day. UVA Head Basketball Coach, Tony Bennett, recently turned down a big raise so his staff could be better compensated and the other sports on his campus would thrive.

Tony Bennett is heading into his 11th basketball season at the University of Virginia and coming off winning a national championship.

His 10th season ended in April with the first NCAA title in program history. The Cavaliers’ appearance in the Final Four was their first in 35 years, and their NCAA tournament run, which came 12 months after a historic first-round loss to UMBC, united alumni, fans and the Charlottesville community.

The athletic director, Carla Williams, got permission from UVA president Jim Ryan, and went to Bennett to discuss a new contract, which would include a substantial raise.

After talking with his wife, Laurel, Bennett declined the raise.

“I have more than I need,” he said. “I’m blessed beyond what I deserve.”
