Legacy

5 things you can do to build your charitable legacy

As families gather around tables at the end of the year, conversations naturally turn to what matters most – the stories we’ll tell, the values we’ll pass down, the heritage we’ll leave behind. While you’re thoughtfully shaping your estate to reflect the legacy you want to leave, don’t forget to consider your charitable legacy too.

Explore these ideas and resources to help you become more intentional.

  1. Define your core legacy and values.
What parts of your life do you hope are remembered or even continued after you’re gone? The best legacies focus more on discipleship than distribution. Beyond money, what do you hope to pass to your heirs? These exercises will help you explore your story and clarify your values, giving you a deeper understanding of what’s most important to you and your family. The results can become a guide for taking intentional steps toward preparing your next generation of givers.
  1. Develop your charitable vision.
Which causes or charities are closest to your heart? And which are you most committed to? If you receive multiple appeals every year to support charities and wonder where your support will have the greatest impact, try this three-step approach to determine which opportunities are right for you.
  1. Align your family around giving.
Ensuring the next generation of givers in your family has a place at the table when giving decisions are made leads to more family unity and better-prepared heirs. Read about our Next Gen Stewardship research for a better understanding of the next generation of faithful givers.
  1. Plan a legacy for generations.
If you want your giving to become part of your family’s story for generations, you can name your Giving Fund at NCF as a beneficiary of your estate and create a legacy of generosity that continues long after you’re gone. Once you’re done, be sure to take these 3 steps to ensure NCF is aware of your plans.
  1. Understand the impact of new tax laws on your estate.
Understand how new tax laws could affect your estate plans and what steps you can take now for more tax-efficient giving. Discuss these resources with your estate planners/advisors. With the federal estate tax exemption now at $15 million, you have a unique opportunity to increase charitable gifts. By directing resources to the churches and causes you care about, you can help ensure they thrive for generations to come.

And remember, the best legacies start early. Consider giving now rather than (or in addition to) later.
